# Matches: Schedule, Score, and Track Results

> A Match in Match Point connects two sides to a scheduled time, court, and final score. Learn the match lifecycle and how to manage every stage.

A Match is the core unit of competition in Match Point. Every match connects two sides (players or teams) to a specific date, time, and court or venue, and it carries a score and a final result. Whether you run a weekly club ladder or a multi-day tournament, understanding how matches work helps you keep your schedule accurate and your players informed.

## What makes up a match

Each match record contains:

* **Two sides**: singles players, doubles pairs, or teams
* **Date and time**: when the match is scheduled to start
* **Court or venue**: the physical location assigned to the match
* **Score**: the points, games, or sets recorded during play
* **Result**: the outcome that determines a winner, loser, or draw

## Match states

Match Point tracks every match through one of four states. The state controls what actions are available and what players see on their dashboards.

| State | What it means | What you can do |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Scheduled** | The match is on the calendar but has not started. | Edit players, time, or court; cancel the match. |
| **In Progress** | The match has started and live scoring is active. | Enter points or sets in real time; the score updates for spectators. |
| **Completed** | The match ended and a final score is saved. | View the result, share it, export a scorecard, or add it to rankings. |
| **Cancelled** | The match was called off before completion. | No score is recorded; the match appears as cancelled in schedules and history. |

A match moves from Scheduled to In Progress automatically when the first score is entered, or you can change the state manually from the match detail page. Completed and Cancelled are final states: to reopen a match, an administrator must reset it to Scheduled.

## Match formats

Match Point supports the most common racquet-sport formats out of the box:

* **Singles**: one player versus another player
* **Doubles**: two-player pairs competing as a team
* **Team match**: multiple rubbers or courts grouped under one team result

You choose the format when you create the match. The format determines how many sides you add, how the scoring interface behaves, and how the result feeds into rankings.

## Where matches appear

Once created, a match shows up in several places so everyone stays aligned:

* **Club calendar**: all scheduled matches in chronological order
* **Player dashboard**: upcoming and recent matches for each participant
* **Tournament bracket**: the match slot it occupies in elimination or round-robin draws
* **Court schedule**: the daily view that venue managers use to avoid double bookings
